Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation ReviewMonday, March 05, 2012
I'm becoming a bit of a foundation junkie at the moment, gone are the days when just one would reside in my make up bag feeling lonely, my make up bag these days is full to the brim of foundations and samples! So a recent new one to my collection is Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum, or as I like to call it Bourjois Healthy Mix's sister. I was and well still am a big fan of the original healthy mix foundation. I know it's one of those foundations that you either love or just don't get it. I used mine religiously last summer and it was so perfect for summer, medium coverage, feels light on the skin and gives a nice dewy/radiant look. So when I heard that Bourjois were bringing out a serum version my ears pricked up. I am loving the whole dewy look at the moment and have cast aside my powder as my skin has been on the slightly dry side lately, so I thought my skin could probably take the serum version. However I figure that come the summer when my skin is more oily, this I will stay well away from. There's a couple of differences between the serum version and the original and there's firstly the glass bottle apposed to the plastic original bottle. Also the fact it's a gel foundation that boasts to radiance boost, even and revive complexions.
So let's get on to the actual review shall we? I've been using this for a good three weeks now and I feel I have a grasp on it now, though it always takes me a couple of months to really get on with a foundation so maybe I'll do a later review if I feel like it.
The Shades: I decided on shade 56 for my skin tone as I have 55 in the original healthy mix which was a little too light when I'd fake tanned so I thought I'd get a shade darker which yes does match when I'm fake tanned but this foundation oxidises a lot. Well I think this is the reason why if you're not careful it goes about 2 shades darker and can leave you looking like an actual oompa loompa. So be aware of this when choosing a shade.
The Application: I find this works well with my Real Techniques buffing brush and it needs to be buffed into the skin or it can have the habit of sitting on the skin. How do I know this? Well whenever I've been on the phone there sometimes can be a trace of foundation which is lovely. I like the finish of this foundation though, it's more dewy than the original healthy mix and you can tell from the consistency that the two foundations are different. If you like more of a natural look then just applying with your fingers would work but I always prefer to use a brush to get a even application.
The Longevity & Coverage : This claims to last for 16 hours on your skin and to be honest I think that's not true. If I just used this on it's own and a little powder maybe I doubt it would last 16 hours. This is lighter in coverage than the original healthy mix so to be honest it's not quite enough for me to wear on it's own, so I do my favourite thing of mixing foundations. I like to mix both healthy mix's foundations together for a nice dewy daytime look, and if I want more coverage I mix it with Estee Lauder's double wear. I also need to powder my nose and forehead lightly with this foundation, as much as I like the dewy look this can sometimes look a little too shiny.
Overall Thoughts: From writing this I can see that this review comes across quite negative and I actually really like this foundation. It's exactly what I thought it would be like, there's no surprises to be honest when you buy a drugstore foundation you take what you can with them. I think for £10.99 it's a good price and a nice daytime foundation. Like I said I'm enjoying mixing with other foundations and I also love the fact that like the original there's no SPF which means no flashback. However when I've run out of this I probably will re-purchase the original healthy mix, sometimes the phrase 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' ring true. Have you tried Bourjois latest healthy mix offering? What did you think?
