Our Bedroom MakeoverFriday, January 08, 2016
One of the things we were most excited about when we moved house, was that we could have a bit of fun with the decorating. Henry and I, probably watch too much Homes Under The Hammer to admit to, and know how much you change a house by a lick of paint and different furniture. We'd spent the past five years renting out flats and houses with strict policies on decorating, you had to make do with what you had and sometimes even hanging stuff on the wall was a no no. So when we moved into out current place which is being rented to us by Henry's family, we had full permission to do whatever we wanted to the place (well within reason of course.)
We're only going to be here for a few months, as then the house will be sold, so although there is so much work we could have done, we decided to keep it quite simple and only update the rooms that we knew that we'd need on a daily basis. The bedroom was our first priority, as both the main bedrooms were decorated in lets say decor that wasn't really our taste. Henry started on the bedroom on the evening that we moved in, so whilst I was unpacking the kitchen, he was stripping the wallpaper. No messing around here. Because we jumped right in to decorating, we may have forgot to take before pictures (damn it) but I have managed to find a kind of hazy pic of what the bedroom did look like before which gives you an idea of how it's changed!
We decided that we wanted it to be very minimal, and clean. Henry stripped the wallpaper, sanded the walls and then painted the walls white. Everyone was like 'white? why not magnolia?' We quite like white cause it's clean, crisp and fresh. It's not for everyone, but personally I quite like it as it makes the room really light and airy.
All our furniture is white, and we decided to add silver and grey accessories into the room. Our bed is a few years old from Ikea, and was almost thrown out when we saw that Brody's annoying daughter on Homeland had the same bed (you'll totally know what I'm talking about if you've watched Homeland) but it does the job and if I remember correctly was pretty barginous for a bed. In fact all the furniture is from Ikea, we used to have an Ikea down the road to us (which I already miss) and it was perfect for picking up furniture when you're on a budget. We also have bedside tables, and the Malm dresser which used to be in my blogging room, but now is full of underwear and some storage for us.
I didn't want to add too much stuff into the room, as our old bedroom was quite cluttered and it always used to seem messy. I like having a tidy room to sleep in, for some reason I just sleep better if the room is tidy and we both agreed we wanted the room to be nice and minimal and not a mess all the time. The second bedroom has a huge built in wardrobe so all our clothes are in there, otherwise we'd of put in a wardrobe too, but didn't see the need if we had all the other storage in the other bedroom. On my bedside table, I have my lamp from Out There Interiors and then a couple of photo frames. Then inside the dresser, I have all of my skincare that I use every night (let me know if you'd like to see what I use on a nightly basis!) On Henry's side, he has his growing collection of Funko Pop figures, he got a couple for Christmas then went to Sainsbury's the other day and loads were reduced to £3 each so he bought them all haha!
On our drawers, we have just a couple of silver candles that I picked up from H&M home aka my fave place for homeware ever. I've popped them on this marble dish, I'm not really sure if it works but we will roll with it for the time being, then I have some fairy lights up cause I'm a big believer in that fairy lights are for life and not just Christmas. Then we have this beautiful mirror which Henry's grandparents bought us an engagement gift, I have no idea where it's from, but I love it. It fits perfectly with the room and is something we will always cherish.
I did say to Henry that I felt that the room was looking a bit soulless, it was weird having such an empty room, so we decided to put some prints on the wall. We got some silver photo frames from Wilko's (they were about 90p-£2 each amazing!) and then we scoured Etsy for prints that we both liked. I didn't want to just choose prints that I liked cause it's not just my room. Finding prints that Henry liked was definitely quite difficult though, we decided on five prints. One New York print, a Gossip Girl quote (had to be done) a puppy that looked like Frank, a quote about staying home and then a silhouette of The Joker and Harley Quinn kissing. I didn't even know who Harley Quinn was until recently so I'm learning fast.
I think these definitely add a little more to the room, the corner next to the ensuite is a little bare, but for now we've just put a mirror there (which does need to be painted grey or white soon) and a laundry basket. I think if we were staying here for awhile, I'd have one of those cool statement chairs or something in the corner but there doesn't seem much point really.
Finally, we spruced up the ensuite a little, I took down the curtains which were patterned and a little out of date, this added some more light to the room and thanks to a frosted window we didn't need to worry about flashing anyone. We also gave the bathroom a good clean and sprayed mould spray everywhere which really freshened up the tiles, I then added some new bathroom accessories such as this marble toothbrush holder and soap dispenser from H&M home. We then got some white bathroom mats and new fluffy towels and the ensuite looked modern and fresh :)
I'm pretty happy with our bedroom now, it's quite simple but it's a nice place to relax in and I really like our prints. I'll be doing some posts on my office/blogging room and our dining room which we've re decorated too! I may also do some other snippets of home ware posts if you'd like to see them?
For now I will stop rambling about our bedroom! Let me know your favourite homeware places!
