How To Banish Dry Skin Left Behind From Winter

Let me tell you, I am so excited that Spring has finally arrived. To be honest, I’d had it up to here with Winter; the dark evenings, (and mornings bleh) the cold windy walks that I have to endure whilst walking Frank and well I could go on. So with Spring finally being here, I am so excited for some warmer weather, lighter evenings and of course all of the Easter snacks (Mini Eggs/Creme Eggs/Golden Eggs am I right?)

But not only am I looking forward to Spring for those reasons, I’m excited for Winter to go, as it’s been causing absolute havoc with my skin this year. Those cold windy walks and having the central heating on full blast, have done nothing for my poor face, and my skin has been going through what can only be described as some kind of crisis; oily, dry, dull and breakout central. Brilliant.

My skin has been super dehydrated and in need of some TLC, I’ve been feeling like it was a lost cause but then I started to change some things up in my daily skincare routine. I was introduced to a new range of skincare products, which thankfully have been helping my skin to bounce back from their dry and dull days.

I’ve also been changing some things up in my everyday routine too, which actually have made a huge difference as well, and today I thought I’d share with you what has been working for me and my skin. I mean it must be working as 1. the other day someone knocked on the door and asked if my Mum was in and 2. a delivery man, who was chatting to me whilst delivering a parcel (he must have been V bored) asked how old I was and almost fell over when I said 25. He then asked what vegetables I’d been eating. I feel like that sassy emoji woman with all these compliments.

So skincare wise, just what have I been using? Well I’ve been trying the Neutrogena Hydro Boost range, which let me tell you, does exactly what it says on the tin (anyone else remember that 90s advert?) as it has given my skin a much needed boost. My skin has been super sensitive lately as I’ve been using an antibiotic cream from the doctors for my spots, and I’ve had to completely change up my skincare and make up routine as my skin is so, so sensitive. However this range has been very gentle, and hasn’t irritated my skin at all. Hallelujah.

So I’ve been trying out pretty much the whole range from Neutrogena, but I do have three standout products, that I’ve been using every day.

First of all is the Hydro Boost GelĂ©e Milk Cleanser which I use to remove my make up with. I used to use it just on the evenings where I was having a little pamper, or had some more time, but recently I’ve been using it every night. It’s a super gentle cleanser but so effective at removing your make up (it even gets rid of waterproof mascara- no more waking up like Marilyn Manson thank you.) Some nights, I use the Cleansing Facial Wipes, for example if I’m extremely tired, but they’ve been more of a gym bag staple for me! But I just love how gentle this make up remover is and how quick it is to use too.

My next fave, is the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Cleanser, which I use as my second step after taking off my make up. This cleanser is super clever as when it’s activated with water, it lathers up, meaning it takes away any last bits of make up and dirt from your face, whilst the ingredients, still give your face a much needed burst of hydration.

After using the two cleansers, my skin is left completely make up free but doesn’t feel stripped, like some cleansers can leave your skin feeling. However, you may want to stroke your face like it’s a puppy after you’ve cleansed with these two products though, so just a little warning there.

Once my skin is fully cleansed, I go in hard with the moisturisers, there’s two different moisturisers in this range, but I have to say (and don’t tell the other one) but the Water Gel Moisturiser is my favourite. It’s really lightweight which means you don’t go to bed with that sticky face feeling, and it instantly locks in hydration and continuously releases it through the night/day (as you could use this under your make up in the morning too!) meaning your skin is constantly being hydrated and is left feeling supple. The formula has ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, so you know it’s a little pot of goodness.

Although the products have done a huge job in getting some much needed hydration back into my skin, I’ve also been trying to get better at upping my water intake as I’ve kinda slipped behind lately, and been going for hot drinks instead (tut tut.) I’ve been getting back into drinking lemon water (sometimes I put  my dressing gown on and pretend I’m at a spa, one time Henry came home from work to find me on the sofa with cucumbers over my eyes - that’s when I knew I’d taken it too far.)

I’ve also been trying to get better at getting into a sleeping routine, I am the worst person for going to bed early as I’m a night owl. However the next morning my skin gives me away, as it always looks so dull after I’ve not had much sleep, in fact I may as well have a big neon sign pointing down saying ‘I’VE HAD NO SLEEP.’ So I’ve been trying to get to bed earlier and wake up earlier too, I’ve been using relaxing videos on YouTube, doing exercise classes in the evening and sleep spray to help me drift off easier and you know what, I think it’s actually working. Though I will honestly say I very much doubt, I’ll ever be a morning person.

I’ve also been trying to eat a little healthier too (and not indulging in too many Mini Eggs haha) and making sure that things that I eat for dinner and lunch are homemade, rather than just relying on things that I just stick in the oven. Increasing my vegetable intake and eating healthier has made me feel so much better and I’ve been noticing that I’ve had less bloating and been feeling more energised throughout the day too, for example I can’t even remember the last time I had an afternoon nap… say whattt.

So these little changes have really made all the difference for not only my skin but how I feel in general. Isn’t it crazy how things so simple can do a world of good?

As well as the Neutrogena products I mentioned above, I also have to give shout outs to the Smoothing Exfoliator Gel which I use every few days to exfoliate away dead skin cells. I use this in the morning to waken up my skin (and me if I’m honest) and it leaves me with a nice smooth base for my make up.

Like I said, there’s two moisturisers within the range, and the Hydro Boost Gel Cream Moisturiser is a bit thicker than the Water Gel Moisturiser so I tend to use this one as an almost face treatment. I’ll apply a pretty thick layer and let it sink in before bed, I find this is good to do a couple of times a week, and it feels amazing after a long stressful day. Also all of the products are oil free, which has been great for my sensitive breakout prone skin, the products have been incredibly effective but also gentle too.

I absolutely love this range, and it really has been helping my winter-y skin. I actually look forward to applying the products and think my skin has been looking better again which is good. I mean it really is simple; water and hydration is the perfect foundation for healthy skin. I just kinda wish I’d realised this earlier, but hey ho, at least I know now right? But what I like about the range, is that it does the job. There’s no messing with 79 different steps, it’s very simple, and does what you want ; add moisture.

I am feeling pretty confident with my skin and I’m feeling very positive for the next few months ahead. I’m ready to bounce back from the dull stressful months of Winter and into Spring, like that little girl from the BBC Skype interview (she is my new role model.)

Do you have any top tips for keeping your skin looking healthy from against the elements?
