Today is October 3rd. A regular day to some. But it’s so much more than just that, it’s in fact Mean Girls Appreciation Day. Mean Girls is my favourite all time film. For the past ten years, I have watched it and still love it now after all that time. I know all the words (yes I’m one of those annoying people who sits and quotes all the lines) and I’m also one of those sad people who use the quotes *to this day* in real life. Now Mean Girls may seem like your regular teen film, but I think it’s much more than that and it actually taught me a lot when I was a teenager.
I posted a tweet earlier on Twitter, of the infamous scene of Cady and Aaron Samuel’s in Math Class, when he asks her ‘ what day it is’ and she replies ‘It’s October 3rd.’ It got over 250 retweets which I was astounded by, and thought I’d write up a quick post about the things I learnt from Mean Girls which makes me love it so much. I hope you like this post, I know it’s different to normal, but I just had an idea and thought ‘hey let’s run with it.’
One thing I love about Mean Girls is that it actually supports girls. Yes the majority of the film is about girls bitching about other girls but the lesson is there, that this doesn’t make you a good person. And if all us girls are all ganging up on each other then we’re making it okay for guys to be mean to us too. I always think that girls should stick together and we should have each others back rather than being bitches to each other for no reason, girls should stick together and not give boys any excuse to be mean to us.
The best scene in my opinion “Four for you Glen Coco, you go Glen Coco!” Just who was Glen? Why did he get four candy canes when he was no way in the same league as Aaron Samuel’s? Hmm I guess we’ll never know, but recently I saw a picture that said ‘Live Everyday Like You’re Glen Coco’ and you know what we should. We should spend our days being positive like we’ve just got four candy canes. Whenever I’m feeling a bit sad/moody I think, hey would Glen Coco be acting like this right now? Trust me it works 🙂
3. You Go Glen Coco Is a Way to Celebrate Someones Success
This is a line I say in real life. You can ask any of my friends/family and they’ll tell you I say this about once a day. It’s a way of me celebrating someones success and it sounds so much more interesting that ‘well done!’ However it’s kind of awkward when people have never watched Mean Girls and just stare at me like ‘ WHO THE F**K IS GLEN COCO?’
Let’s talk about being bitches again. When Cady is at the Maths Competition and she realises that making fun of the girl in front of her won’t make her win the competition any more. She realises that calling some fat doesn’t make you skinnier, and calling someone stupid won’t make you smarter. Focus on yourself and what you’re doing, not anyone else.
Never let people get you down or let people stop you from doing what you want in life. I am one of those people who cares way too much about what other people think, and as I’ve got older I have realised that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. So thank you Kevin G for speaking some very wise words.
It’s true. But not too slutty, it can be quite cold on Halloween.
7. ‘Never trust people with big hair’
Because it’s full of secrets, or just dry shampoo.
Never get with one of your girl friends ex boyfriends. Seriously not cool.
9. To Never Judge People
Never judge a book by it’s cover, like Karen did with Cady when she announced she had transferred from Africa. Mean Girls teaches us that people don’t always look how you may imagine, and you should never make assumptions about people if you don’t know them and their story.
Enough said, you have been warned.
